Virginia Street Studios

295 E. Virginia St., San Jose, CA

Virginia Street Studios is the largest senior affordable housing project in San Jose, CA, one of America’s most expensive places to live. It is the first project produced by Autovol, a modular manufacturer using automation and robotics in an inventive new way.

The seniors-only, 301-unit property offers easy access to the 101, 280, and 87 freeways. Amenities include a community room, a modern and spacious courtyard, fitness center, pet and BBQ areas, breezeway entries, a unique 9,450 sq. ft. rooftop deck with an urban garden and 360-degree views, onsite laundry facilities, elevators and street-level parking.

The property is a collaboration between TPC, the USA Properties Fund, and AMG & Associates—converted by Architects Orange for efficient modular-friendly design, and completed onsite by Pacific West Builders. Many other collaborators leaned into this modular-focused project where onsite construction may have been near impossible due to multiple angles of traffic and space constraints onsite for things like materials storage and crew parking.

All the apartment rooms and many common areas were built inside the Autovol factory. TPC sponsored the development of this factory, which helps fill the labor gap by augmenting tradespeople with robotics, which do the heavy lifting. As Autovol’s first project and San Jose’s largest to date affordable housing property for seniors, the project is especially history making.
